Layering — the art of superimposing clothes — is the most useful fashion technique in winter. When mastered, it keeps you warm while creating rich and structured silhouettes that cannot be achieved with a single piece. When poorly mastered, it gives the impression of having gained three sizes. We'll give you all the rules to successfully layer every time.
The 3-layer rule
Effective layering relies on a structure of 3 progressive layers: a fitted base, a textured mid-layer, and a structuring outer layer. Each layer should be slightly looser than the previous one to avoid a "sausage" effect.
Layer 1 — The fitted base
The piece closest to the body. Must be thin, shaping, and invisible under other layers. The square-neck bodysuit is ideal: it doesn't ride up, doesn't create bulges, and maintains the silhouette.

Adds texture and warmth. Slim-fit turtleneck, knitted sleeveless sweater, or cardigan. This layer creates visual interest for the outfit — choose a textured material.

Protects from the cold and structures the silhouette. Sleeveless down jacket, coat, blazer. The ultra-light down jacket is perfect as it doesn't add unnecessary bulk.

💡 The rule of proportions
If your bottom layer is loose (oversized sweater), keep the bottom fitted (leggings, slim-fit trousers). If your bottom is wide (palazzo trousers), keep the top fitted. The top/bottom balance is the key to successful layering.
